Terms of use

This site is designed primarily to help journalists who are looking for the latest first direct news and other resources.

If you are looking for specific information about our products and services please go to

RSS Feeds

The site generates a news feed (also called an RSS feed) which you can subscribe to by clicking on the logo that looks like this: RSS in the top right hand corner of the home page. This feed will automatically update your newsreader (including some email programs) with any new posts on the site.

Alternatively, if you are only interested in certain topics, you can use our "tag cloud" to select a topic (just click on the word which interests you) and subscribe using the grey RSS logo on the page which follows.

If you don't know what RSS is, or you don't have a feed reader, here is what Wikipedia has to say about RSS. We use bloglines as our feed reader, but there are lots of other good ones too.

If you want to download our photos, you can click on any individual photo to see an enlarged version. Click on the photo then click on the download button underneath. If you need it to be bigger, just follow the link to our Flickr page where you can download any of our photos for free.

We host all our videos on YouTube, if you want to share or use them, please feel free using the links which YouTube provides. Just click on the logo to visit our YouTube page.

For Bloggers / Journalists:

Press releases are featured in the "breaking news" on the homepage and published separately in the "press area" section, however, please feel free to use content from any part of the site.

All the content on this site is licensed under the creative commons license agreement at the point of publication.

Modifications to Terms and Conditions

We may want to change these terms in the future and we reserve the right to do so at any time. Any such change in Terms and Conditions will be effective as soon as it's published on this web page. You should check the Terms and Conditions every now and again to ensure that you are aware of and are complying with the current version.

Governing law

The interpretation, construction, effect and enforceability of these Terms and Conditions will be governed by English Law, and you and first direct agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts for the determination of disputes.

We want users to enjoy leaving feedback in the first direct Newsroom. So if you aren't happy with something let us know. To make a formal complaint, you can either email us at or send a signed written letter of complaint to:

Once we've got as much information as we need, we'll consider the complaint and take appropriate action, letting you know as soon as we've reached a decision.
