HSBC, first direct and M&S Money pledge further assistance for customers impacted by volcanic ash disruption

21 Apr 2010

Last Friday, HSBC, M&S Money and first direct confirmed that, although claims relating to volcanic eruptions are not usually covered by travel insurance policies, they would, on this particular occasion, allow claims from UK customers affected by the volcanic ash.

Today, in a separate announcement, the three brands have now confirmed that they will provide further support for their customers in the following ways:

  • Any overseas ATM transaction fees incurred by debit and credit card customers between 15th and 26th April will be automatically refunded. Customers do not need to do anything as refunds will automatically appear on future statements.
  • Requests for increases to overdraft and credit card limits will be viewed positively on a case by case basis. In addition, any overdraft or over limit fees incurred by customers whilst stranded abroad will be refunded where appropriate to do so.
  • Any customers who bought their travel money through either HSBC, M&S Money or first direct and have subsequently been forced to cancel their holidays can exchange their foreign currency back to sterling at the rate at which it was sold.*

- ends -

* Customers will need to produce their original receipt and only the full original purchase will be refunded at the original price. This facility is only available until 1st May 2010.
